Transworld Snowboarding Promotes Annie Fast and Nick Hamilton

Oceanside, Calif. May 12, 2008 Transworld SNOWboarding, a division of Bonnier Corporation, is pleased to announce the promotions of Annie Fast to Editor and Nick Hamilton to Director Of Photography and Video.

"We are all excited to have Annie and Nick stepping up to lead Transworld SNOWboarding," says Adam Cozens, Associate Publisher. "They both have the experience, vision, and relationships that it takes to lead the world's #1 snowboarding magazine and Web site into the most successful years ever."

Annie joined Transworld Media in 2002, as an integral part of the team that created Transworld SNOWboarding's special editions. Since her hire, Annie's position has grown to encompass every aspect of both print and online publishing. Prior to her Transworld tenure, Annie had wrapped up her education at Montana State University and was snowboarding year-round at places like Big Sky, Montana and Mt. Hood's High Cascade Snowboard Camp, where she coached freestyle snowboarding. Despite Transworld SNOWboarding's intense production schedule, Annie continues to ride 60-plus days each season, and in 2007 she managed to take top honors in the Women's Master's Division of the Mt. Baker Banked Slalom.

"I'm excited to continue the tradition of success and progression at Transworld SNOWboarding," said Annie. "I'm confident that, along with our experienced staff, we'll keep moving forward and growing both in our print publication and with the exciting relaunch of transworldsnowboarding.com."

Nick Hamilton joined Transworld as Photo Editor in 2002 after spending six years as a Photo Contributor. Since his hire, Nick's role has expanded to include all details of photography production for Transworld SNOWboarding and transworldsnowboarding.com. Previously, Nick spent six years shooting around the world as the Photo Editor for British snowboard magazine White Lines. Nick's eye for great shots and expertise in photography helped earn Transworld two Henry R. Luce Awards: Cover Of The Year in 2004 and Photography Award in 2006.

"TWS has always been known for the best photography in the business and with the addition of Joe Carlino's feature film, These Days, we will continue to push the visual envelope with more award-winning imagery," says Nick.

Reorganization follows the departure of longtime Editor In Chief Kurt Hoy who has decided to pursue other opportunities. "I'm really pleased that Bonnier recognized the talent we have on staff and chose to promote from within," says Kurt Hoy. Snow Sports Retail Sales Buck National Economic Trends
Snow Sports Product Sales Records Strong Growth at Retail for 2007-08 Season to Almost $3 Billion

The snow sports products market grew by $280 million to reach $2.97 billion for the 2007.08 season, up from approximately $2.69 billion in all channels last season. Equipment sales were relatively flat in specialty shops and chain stores but increased by more than $40 million in online sales. Apparel sales increased by more than $100 million with snowboard tops and parkas selling very well in all channels. Kurt Widen, KJUS USA COO says, "The US market is challenging especially in these difficult economic times. However, snowfall is a great equalizer in our market, and early snowfall in the 07/08 ski season helped jump start sales in our segment. This along with strong sell through and continued growth in awareness of our relatively young brand positioned us well for the 08/09 order season where we saw a 27% increase over last year."

Healthy sales of helmets, goggles and snowshoes led increases in accessories sales that grew by $64 million this season in specialty shops and online. "It's hard to imagine a better season in the accessories business. We sold out of helmets and our goggle supply was similarly tight thanks to a season where every region had record snowfall and every resort was open," states Blair Clark, SMITH Optics, Sr. VP, Marketing and Sales.

Annual Summer Program Encourages and Empowers Girls to Participate in Action Sports

etnies is excited to announce the 3rd Annual etnies Girls Get on Board (GGOB) clinic, a nation-wide series of female-only action sports instructional programs committed to inspiring girls to participate in action sports and encouraging them to remain active to lead a healthy lifestyle. For this year's program, etnies has again partnered with the Girls Riders Organization (GRO), a nonprofit group with a mission to inspire, educate and support girls in action sports, to present a tour of GGOB clinics and special events. Other partners in the event series include skateboarding label Cool Girls Decks, the Boarding For Breast Cancer foundation (B4BC) and the HB Wahine All Girl Surf School.

Beginning this month etnies' professional team riders, serving as ambassadors for the GGOB program, will travel to some of the 40 cities across the nation to mentor and coach females of all ages in the action sports categories of Skate, BMX, Surf and Motocross. The clinics consist of on-site demonstrations and hands-on training in a fun and safe environment including one-on-one interaction with top professional female athletes. Girls come away from the program with the basic skills of each sport and build their confidence in action sports.

"The team riders are excited to once again participate in the etnies Girls Get on Board clinic and show our support for the program. It's important to show that action sports are fun and safe for girls and empower more young women to participate," says Lauren Perkins, etnies skate team rider. "Whether it be for recreation, exercise or to pursue professional careers, it is great for us to see how many more girls are learning these sports each year."

"We are really glad to partner with the etnies GGOB program again this year," says Courtney Payne, founder of GRO. "This partnership combines the team riders and momentum of etnies GGOB program with GRO's experienced instructors and the close interaction with local communities across the country."

The etnies Girls Get on Board program, along with GRO, will host 40 free clinics for girls as it embarks on its way around the country, including a stop at the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest, Calif., before culminating in November in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The next all-girls skate clinic is on May 10 at Journey's Backyard BBQ in Dallas, Texas. The Zoo York Institute and New Era, in association with the Harold Hunter Foundation and KCDC Skateshop, are proud to announce that the 2nd Annual Harold Hunter Day will take place Saturday, May 17th, in New York City.

Harold Hunter Day II will unite NYC's skateboarding community and surrounding scene for a positive day of skating in recognition of the vibrant life and times of New York legend, Harold Hunter. An extraordinary personality with a caring heart, Harold touched the lives of countless people around the world. With Harold's passing in February 2006, HH Day was established to commemorate a life well lived by celebrating the things Harold loved most - skateboarding, music, friends, good times, and of course, NYC.

"Harold was, and forever will be, the epitome of New York City," says friend and ZY Brand Director Mark Nardelli. "As he once told me on a funny voicemail, �Harold Hunter is gold.' He was an integral part of Zoo and he personified NYC's unique charm that I look to for inspiration every day. HH Day is a day to rep and rock the spirit of Harold Hunter!"

On May 17th, Harold Hunter Day II will kick off at the Manhattan Bridge Skatepark located underneath the Manhattan Bridge on the corner of Pike and Monroe Streets in Chinatown. From Noon-6pm an all ages skate jam will take place, with a massive product toss and live music provided by DJ's Neil Nice, Vinny Ponte, and New York's finest, Pete Rock.

After the skate jam, a special HH Day II party will go down from 8pm-Midnight at KCDC Skateshop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Open to the 21+ crowd only, the party will feature free drinks, live music, an art installation by Cinik, and a slide show of Harold pics from acclaimed photographer and long-time friend, Giovanni Reda.

2008 SIMA Image Awards Ceremony to See New Changes
Newly Designed, Handcrafted Trophies Will Debut; FUEL TV's Pat Parnell to Host Award Ceremony

SIMA is proud to announce two exciting changes to the 2008 SIMA Image Awards ceremony. The ceremony will mark the unveiling of new handcrafted trophies, as well as welcome FUEL TV's Pat Parnell as the official ceremony host. The 6th annual awards ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 16, during Surf Summit 11 in Los Cabos, Mexico.

In striving to develop a unique trophy that would become the known as the iconic statue associated with the Image Awards, SIMA put out a call to various surf industry designers looking for original trophy ideas. After reviewing the proposals drafted by several designers, SIMA selected a �cubistic wave' trophy design by Steve Fawley. The final piece is being handcrafted out of bamboo. A photo of the new trophy is attached.

"My love for the ocean, surfing, art and cubism is what inspired me to create this image," said Fawley. "I wanted to create something unique, with meaning behind it, that represented the surf industry. The concept revolves around the wave - the foundation for our industry. The wave is executed in a cubistic style; as cubism revolutionized the 20th century culture, surfing has revolutionized the 21st century culture. On top of that, these trophies are awarded to brands and products that have revolutionized our industry. I am stoked to see everyone's reaction to the trophies as I'm so honored to have been the artist to create this iconic image for SIMA."

In addition, Fawley was inspired to create a more eco-friendly trophy. Each trophy has been meticulously handcrafted out of bamboo by Ben Wilko. An Aussie native and friend of Fawley, Wilko has been a carpenter for 10 years. Like Fawley, Wilko also has a passion for the ocean and surfing that connected him to this project. A big-wave surfer, Wilko has spent the past three winters on the North Shore and is a Waimea regular who is currently training to get ready for the winter big-wave season. SIMA was stoked to bring another surfer into the project.

"I have a passion for woodworking and love a challenge," said Wilko. "When Steve brought me the design, some building friends of mine questioned if the trophy could be done in wood. After I made a mock-up I found it was possible - difficult, but possible. The 15 sculptures have over two thousand individual cuts and angles that made for a very time and labor intensive project, not to mention the sanding and finishing. I am stoked on the finished product and stoked to have collaborated with such a talented artist as Steve Fawley."

The awards ceremony itself will be taken up a notch with the addition of FUEL TV's Pat Parnell as the official host for the evening. Parnell is the host of FUEL TV's "Daily Habit" and is a well-known action sports industry and television personality with a long list of hosting credits to his name. He has served as the play-by-play commentator for snowboarding during NBC's Olympic coverage of the 2002 and 2006 games, and has been seen hosting a variety of action sports contests and shows including the Dew Action Sports Tour, the U.S. Open of Snowboarding, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing events, ASP World Championship Tour events, and the MTV Sports and Music Festival.

"Hosting is one thing," says Parnell. "Hosting an awards show in front of industry executives with an open bar on the beach is something entirely different. Obviously, I'm stoked. Besides, surfing Zippers with half of Orange County will be an honor."

The SIMA Image Awards is the only awards program that gives the surf industry the opportunity to recognize fellow surf industry companies for their outstanding contributions to the industry. The goal of the program is to identify the surf industry's most influential companies and recognize them for their efforts to advance and grow the industry over the past year. Look for winners to be announced after the May 16 ceremony.
