ADDENDUM: THIS IS AN ENTRY LEVEL GIG. IT'S IN NYC. IDEAL CANDIDATE IS A SMART, TECH-SAVVY, HARD-WORKING ACTION SPORTS PARTICIPANT LIVING ON THE EAST COAST. FRESH OUT OF JOURNALISM SCHOOL A PLUS.
ESPN Action Sports (EXPN.com) is looking for an Associate Editor with 1-2 years experience to work under the General Editors, Editor and Site Director, assisting in all aspects of site production.
Responsibilities include:
* Action sports experience: a participant with a deep working knowledge of action sports athletes, history, tricks, companies and PR. Yep, you need to be down – and you need to know if neck tats fall within that category.
* Maintenance and oversight of the news wire section of EXPN.com across all sports: this requires multi-tasking, prioritizing directives, being personable and having constant communication with industry contacts (both athletes and companies) to feed you news and press releases regularly, as well as having a working and impassioned knowledge of action sports print and web resources (as well as the general news media) from which to build original, engaging spins on news and trends on an ongoing, daily basis.
* Ownership of overall site QA and daily publishing needs: Along with the wire, this person will be responsible for building and publishing feature content packages on a daily basis, maintaining sport archive pages, bug testing story pages and links for currency and glitches, maintaining cross-linkage and other navigational elements between groups, search engine optimization and assisting in monitoring and publishing breaking action sports news as it happens.
* Updating the action sports section of the ESPN Mobile website with current and relevant features.
* Editorial oversight, news judgment and strong grammar/punctuation skills a pragmatist who uses spell check: In addition to writing and editing for the wire (where additional reportage and research may often be required), this person may be asked to write the occasional photo caption, headline, subhead or other promotional copy for the site and is expected to maintain the overall tone, voice and style consistent with the standards of the site.
* Additional staff support and participation in discussions and planning of the monthly editorial calendar.
Qualifications:
* Highly organized, this person typically has 1-2 years journalism or communications experience in an action sports-related field and the ability to balance conflicting priorities and demands.
* Has fundamental competence in writing, editing, fact checking and reporting and a good understanding of web researching.
* Is a good communicator and has a friendly, interactive disposition and appreciation of action sports’ culture understands the tastes of EXPN.com’s viewers.
* Is technically savvy and a fast learner: has a basic understanding of HTML and related web-authoring tools and software, Photoshop, FTP servers, PC and Mac operating systems.
* Undergraduate degree or higher in journalism, communications, or a related field preferred.
