The Gear Editor, Men’s Journal will serve as the lead editor for Men’s Journal’s gear coverage in print and online. This role requires a passion for and extensive knowledge of or deep curiosity for gear in multiple categories, including outdoor sports, personal, home, and AV technology, kitchen and cooking, and tools and home maintenance.
The Gear Editor will be responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Owning the daily, weekly, and monthly output for the magazine and website’s Gear Lab section
• Managing the conception and execution of annual gear guides, including the Style & Design issue
• Curating best-in-class category and themed product roundups
• Assigning and conducting in-depth product reviews
• Collaborating with the Photo Director on original product photography
• Ensuring all magazine editorial is delivered on deadline and fully prepared for print
• Ensuring all digital editorial adheres to best practices for SEO and social media
• Building and maintaining a deep and wide network of contacts at brands, manufacturers, and agencies
• Covering breaking news as it relates to Men’s Journal’s categories of gear coverage
• Protecting and enhancing Men’s Journal’s reputation for excellence in gear coverage
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Excellent editorial skills; able to craft a story, copy edit, fact check, and publish with little oversight
• Proven track record of expertise with product reviews and a diverse set of tactics from which to draw when determining a given product’s quality and efficacy
• Comfortable assigning to, and editing, contributors
• 5+ years of digital media experience and a high level of comfort working with daily content expectations; prior magazine experience a plus
• Existing network of brand contacts preferred
• Able to clearly articulate thoughts, ideas, and instruction verbally and in writing
• Able to work efficiently as a team and individually
• Possess strong organization skills
• Able to consistently meet deadlines while managing multiple deadlines and projects at the same time
• Strong proficiency in Wordpress, the Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Google Analytics
• Strong proficiency with SEO and social media best practices
The Gear Editor roll is located in Men’s Journal’s new office, within Adventure Sports Network, in Carlsbad, CA.
