POSITION: Test Engineer
REPORTS TO: Engineering Manager for Global Testing and Research
SUMMARY: The Test Engineer is primarily responsible to document tests and report on experiments. This position will also develop new testing protocols as needed and be responsible for test fixture design &/or improvements. This position will clearly communicate test results with design engineers and suppliers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Manages experiments with direction from the Product Development team that would benefit upcoming projects. Must be able to to take the design engineers requests for certain information and develop a test protocol to deliver the necessary information.
· Have a solid understanding of bicycle and rider statics and kinematics
· Use knowledge of kinematics to design experiments that target exactly what design engineer is looking for.
· Be able to gather information with the application of various data acquisition tools including strain gages and accelerometers.
· Report on findings clearly and professionally.
2. Designs fixtures to test bicycles. Takes experimental findings and turns those into controlled repeatable tests. Works with machine shop and occasionally outside vendors to turn fixture drawings into parts.
· Takes responsibility for project and sees them through from start to finish.
· Must have an understanding of manufacturing.
· Designs fixtures, using pro/e & autocad, knowing that they must be robust, easy to use, and easy to manufacture.
· Conduct correlation testing to verify new fixtures meet our intentions.
3. Documents tests and communicates issues with design engineers. Organizes testing and helps to track progress on part qualification. Understands all international testing standards and makes sure all testing is being done to meet those standards
· Writes detailed test reports on each tested specimen, including analysis of failure.
· Works with test technicians to ensure all products are being tested correctly based on their intended use.
4. Works with Taiwan facility and our suppliers to harmonize test protocol.
· Makes sure that all new tests are duplicated by our Taiwan facility.
· Will require traveling to Taiwan and China to teach staff on new tests and protocol
· Must be able to clearly communicate ideas and objectives to people who speak English as a secondary language.
5. Programs and tunes MTS testing equipment using knowledge of closed loop conrol systems. Communicate issues with testing equipment to vendors and problem solves issues when necessary.
6. Helps out setting up tests and doing general technician duties during busy times of the year.
7. Continually helping to find way to improve our testing and documentation process.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Prefer experience in some type of testing capcity.
2. At least two years experience in bicycle or a recreation-related industry.
3. Prefer experience in manufacturing.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
1. Prefer four-year college degree or equivalent accredited Engineering School Certificate. Course work should include CAD design, electrical engineering, and extensive laberatory work.
2. Requires advanced knowledge of statics and dynamics as it relates to bicycle use.
3. Requires adanced ability in the application and theory of several data collection tools, including strain gages, accelerometers, etc.
4. Requires knowledge of closed loop control systems.
5. Requires Microsoft Excel and Word software skills.
6. Requires a working knowledge of material failure. Specifically the effect different manufacturing process has on material failure.
7. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with in-house staff, vendors and foreign contacts.
8. Ability to identify and solve hardware/software and inter-related computer equipment problems effectively.
9. Machine shop ability: able to machine or weld one off parts.
10. Ability to assemble bicycles and bicycle parts.
11. Ability to solve problems on the spot.
12. Capable of performing job responsibilities with limited supervision.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Some travel required.
2. Office is in a test lab and at times could be dangerous. (Safety precautions must be adhered to.)
3. Workweek may include Saturdays and Sundays. Alternate days off should be scheduled in advance.
