If you want to live in one of the world’s premier mountain communities, work in apparel design for the best climbing company on the planet, in a fast paced, startup environment, learn all there is about garment construction, manufacturing and have a passion for making the best products in the world, this job could be for you.

In a nutshell:
Working with the Director of Design for Apparel, some of your tasks would include translating ideas into two and three-dimensional concepts, build tech-packs and update merchandising maps to reflect most current color theory. You will work closely with our developers and material engineers to tweak products based on lab & field-testing. Basically, you will get involved in any and all aspects of Apparel design, and there’s no way to predict what is going to come next. Sound like fun? Keep reading. However, if your background is purely in Graphic design, this job probably is not for you.

What we are looking for:
You are someone that cares about getting the details right, are passionate about the sports we serve and think outside of the box. You speak illustrator fluently. You will need to understand the basics of fit and patterning and have a strong passion for the outdoors, the market and the sports we serve. You are a talented and intuitive designer and you just can’t help being creative in all aspects of your life. You love to use, design, build, break and repeat, have a bias towards action.

Some more about this role:

If you were working for us, these would be some of the things you could have done this week:
- Presented a list of your tasks for this week to the design director and reviewed their priorities and general approach.
- Updated several drawings to reflect a change in construction made after additional field-testing.
- Assisted in pant fit sessions, pinning and adjusting patterns to reflect improvements in fit.
- Built a visual representation of all the trims used for Fall 2014 in their actual colors. Gone out of your way to get the actual pieces in their correct color from the vendors with our materials developers in addition to a digital file that can be shared and stored, added pricing and sourcing information for good measure.
- Updated color merchandise pages based on changes in brand colors, fixed a few line-weight and alignment issues while you were in the file.
- Mocked up a new pant adjustment system we’re working on for field testing, added an extra idea that you had while you were working on it. Presented this evolution to the Design Director.
- Climbed in the new prototypes with our field test team, brainstormed on additional improvements.
- Printed out and presented color direction for Spring 2014, set up a meeting for a group of us to review a down selection of the color palette.
- Built factory specification packages for a regional pant program, gone out of your way to make sure all details are dialed and independently got missing information about trim codes from cross functional partners.

Experience we need to see:
You should have a Bachelors degree in Design or closely related field. Additionally, you would have completed at least one internship in a relevant company, doing a set of tasks comparable to what is listed above, plus you can show you worked in illustrator CS for a significant amount of time.

Preferably, you can also show us you’ve worked for a few years post graduation and built experience in product design or other closely related field.

What also helps is if you have an active blog, Tumblr or webpage with tons of fun inspiring stuff on it, keep sketch books, have things you’ve built yourself and use in the outdoors. Also, you know everything there is to find about Black Diamonds Apparel launch plus poses a strong opinion about brands, a passion for the outdoor industry and community we all love so much.
