SurfShot is a media company offering reliable online surf reports for 7 years and a 120+ page full color, glossy magazine established for 3.5 years. The magazine is a free publication is funded by advertising revenue. That means a lot of attention needs to be devoted to all ads and their deadlines.
We're looking for a person who is an experienced and progressive Senior Graphic Designer or Junior Art Director with strong and innovative graphic design, page layout, and illustration skills to put together a modern surf magazine.
The ideal candidate must have a comprehensive understanding of magazine production and work with cutting edge creative concepts appropriate to the style of our publication. Our magazine already has an identity and we are looking for someone to maintain the feel and aesthetic while adding a degree of originality and distinctiveness to the design.
Experience with digital photography and Web Design is a big plus for this position.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, layout and production of 100+ pages. This person will have his/her hands on design of features and articles – page layout, captions and quotes – columns, covers, and ads. Management of the design process and workflow from beginning to end, including pre-press work is also necessary. This person will report to the Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director and will work closely with other editors as well as the Photo Editor. The Art Director will interact with the publishers as well as outside clients, and the sales crew from whom he will obtain all the photos, articles and advertisement artwork.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, or have experience working in related field.
• Preferred Graphic Design major with emphasis on Publication Design.
• Minimum of 5 years experience working in the field.
• Currently or previously worked in the surf industry a plus.
• Very good working knowledge of desktop publishing software (Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator).
• Working knowledge of printing pre-press processes and procedures, and working experience with 4/c printing and digital file (PDF) delivery.
• Advanced design and communication skills showing the ability to be innovative and proactive in both design and process.
• Attention to detail and quality comfortable adapting to changing schedules and meeting deadlines.
Pluses:
• Digital photography experience – shooting and image manipulation.
• Experience negotiating with vendors and supervising freelance designers.
• Fine Art education.
