The International Surfing Association (ISA), located in the REEF HG building in Carlsbad, Calif., is looking for an ISA Managing Director with 5+ years experience.
JOB SUMMARY:
Manage and carry out the daily operations of the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Headquarters. Travel three to four times per year to oversee the ISA World Surfing Championships.
REPORTS TO:
ISA President Fernando Aguerre, president of the ISA since 1994.
ISA President is recognized as the leading surfing diplomat and administrator in the world. Founder and former owner of surf brand Reef, and also involved in several humanitarian and environmental organizations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the affairs of the ISA, reporting to ISA President.
- Serve as ISA’s primary contact person for communication and correspondence with all ISA Member Nations (National Surfing Federations), World Championship organizers, media contacts and general public.
- Maintain ISA Executive Committee, ISA Staff, and Member Nations updated about ISA events, meetings, contact information or any other general ISA matters. Be proactive in maintaining contact and providing communication with ISA members.
- Manage ISA HQ office operations and procedures for bookkeeping/accounting, communication management, filing systems, and other related day-to-day activities to ensure timely, complete, and efficient workflow.
- Establish and maintain uniform and consistent correspondence procedures.
- Maintain monthly ISA Headquarters calendar of activities, deadlines and upcoming dates.
- Work with ISA staff and ISA Media Manager in the creation and editing of press releases and monthly publication of World Surfing News, manage and update the ISA website with photos and text.
-Publish the Annual ISA Guide, including coordination with other non profits for article submissions, annually updating ISA program information and photos.
- Manage the process of selecting host of ISA World Championships. Manage timeline of events and the preparations of the hosting organizations, ensuring proper and timely event organization.
- Manage team registrations on site at events, assisted by ISA and Event Staff.
- Manage opening and closing ceremonies on site at Events.
- Maintain records of Member Nation status such as payments, event participation, active/inactive status, activity reports, etc.
-Prepare monthly financial reports such as income statements, cash flow, budget, cost reduction plans, and taxes. Assist CPA with yearly audit. Track financial data (AP & AR). Administer payroll and employees benefits.
-Coordinate, manage and prepare documentation for all ISA Executive and AGM’s of the ISA.
- Maintain proper tax and trademark recordings and filings. Respond to government and attorney inquiries.
- Draft and revise proposals, letters and agreements for improving efficiency and development of the ISA and its members.
- Manage development projects including but not limited to Adapted Surfing, Individual Scholarship, Coaching, Judging and surf school register programs.
- Work with Athlete, Medical, Technical, New Surfing Nation Development and Executive Committees.
REQUIREMENTS:
- We are looking for an individual with at least a BA/BS degree and/or a minimum of 5+ years of related professional experience. Higher degree very desirable.
Strong project management, proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Quick Books Accounting, good attention to detail, solid organization skills, strong time management, ability to problem solve.
- Must be self motivated, able to multi-task, manage priorities and meet deadlines. Minimum two (2) years experience in simple financial reporting. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with ability to effectively communicate with a variety of cultures and/or persons. Working knowledge of Spanish and other languages is highly desirable and a plus. Willing to work long hours overseas for two weeks at a time, 2-3 times per year, during ISA World Championships.

- The ISA is a non-profit organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the International Federation for all wave-riding sports including surfing, stand up paddle surfing, jet-surfing, body surfing and body-boarding.
The ISA is dedicated to the development of these sports worldwide. The ISA provides guidance and advice to its members around the world on matters such as competition, judging, coaching, surf schools, anti doping and drug testing and other areas of development of the sport.
- The ISA also provides cash scholarships for girls and boys, surfers under the age of 18 years old, focused on their academic and surfing careers.
The ISA selects host countries for the three yearly ISA World Surfing Championships: Juniors, Masters and Open.
