POSITION SUMMARY:
Accountable for all activities for the Advanced Apparel Department including management of inhouse and contract Advanced Developers, relationships and apparel needs of Pearl Izumi sponsored teams and athletes, external relationships with consultants and technology companies, and cooperation and collaboration with the Pearl Izumi Inline Product and Development teams.
As head of Advanced Development this position is responsible to drive the vision and direction for performance improvement products for Pearl Izumi athletes, explore new technologies, and create development partnerships for apparel and footwear technologies all with a goal of bringing these product categories to market in conjunction the Pearl Izumi Product and Development organizations.
The head of Advanced Development will work with teams and athletes, manage a combination of 1-2 internal Advanced Developers as well as external developers, consultants, or experts in the fields of aerodynamics, thermal regulation, protection, cushioning, vibration control, comfort, medical benefits as they apply to cycling, tri, run and other performance apparel and footwear.
Together with the Apparel Director and VP of Marketing, the head of Advanced Development will determine strategy and direction for specific Advanced Development projects.
Essential Job Functions:
Management
• Establish & maintain an Advanced Development function to create revolutionary “Vector” styles that can cascade their technologies into core volume products for Pearl Izumi.
Build and manage the network of internal and external resources to drive innovation, performance and comfort enhancing technologies in order to bring inline products to market for Pearl Izumi.
• Collaborate with the Product Line Managers, Quality Managers, Design & Development teams, sub contract specialists & vendor development teams.
• Instill & foster a culture of performance and innovation.
Help manage team and sponsorship relationships and equipment needs in collaboration with the VP of Marketing for Cycling Teams and the Director of Run Marketing for Tri and Run athletes.
Develop systems and procedures for efficient workflow within the Advanced Development department’s prototype facility and Pearl Izumi factories.
Actively identify and update on a monthly basis the product organization regarding new technology developments which may be beneficial to Pearl Izumi.
Provide the department with clear objectives, calendars, and tracking
Ensure compliance with all company personnel policies.
Advanced Research
Foster favorable outside working relationships with experts in exercise physiology, aerodynamics, thermal regulation, biomechanics, and experts in areas of the body affected by run and cycling activities such as foot, hand and proctology.
Gain insight into new technologies and opportunities to drive innovation by constantly identifying new technologies which may be utilized by Pearl Izumi and our performance athletes.
Articulate opportunities/concepts to the company's design and product teams.
Support all efforts to prove efforts with testing, performance athletes, and product testers. Work with product team to identify go to market opportunities
Gather input from performance athletes to help drive innovation and new break-thrus.
Maintain an ongoing review of our industry and others for technology, innovations, culture and unique ways of building product.
Marketing / Sales Support
• Support Product, Marketing and Sales in the development of marketing messages & sales tools that reinforce the benefits of new products made possible by Advanced Development team.
Financial Responsibilities
Responsible for creating and managing the Advanced Development budget and working with Marketing to manage the budgets for performance teams.
Ensure that new projects are engineered in accordance within cost guidelines and with an eye on bringing new technologies to market profitably.
Manage and execute contracts, NDAs and relationships with external parties.
Minimum Job Qualifications
• Bachelors Degree required.
• Proven team leadership experience in challenging roles and environments. Able to enthuse and motivate self and others to exceed seasonal and yearly goals.
• Previous work experience within the North American and EU.
Overall 8 years minimum related work experience in the sporting goods industry, specializing in product development, advanced development, product management, sourcing, design and / or marketing.
Minimum 6 years product management & development experience including experience in billing of materials, cost analysis, sourcing, management of developers, and budgeting.
Minimum 3 years experience with Asian & European vendors.
Demonstrated experience in managing product gross margin and operating expenses.
Strong written, verbal and quantitative skills.
Ability & willingness to undertake frequent and potentially extensive travel throughout the US, Asia & Europe.
Knowledge of global suppliers and contractors for garment production, fabric development, and design resources.
Excellent oral, written and computer (Microsoft Windows Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) communication skills for interaction with both internal and external customers.
