SMU Manager
Fox Head, Inc. designs, markets, and distributes premium quality clothing, motocross performance apparel, footwear and related products. The SMU Manager will work with Retailer, Design, and Merchandising to coordinate the design and development for styles from concept to finished goods for special make-up customers. As SMU manager you will use your skills and knowledge of merchandising, design and development to create or modify designs specific to the needs of individual customers. Utilize analytical skills to assist in all strategic planning for customer including pre-season planning, projecting sales, sku, and units. Focus will be to generate successful styles that are an accurate reflection of Fox’s design aesthetic and sales/profit goals realizing our position as an industry leader in Action Sports clothing.
This position is based at our Irvine, CA office.
Essential Functions of this Role:
1. Work with the Design and Product Development teams in order to meet objectives and deadlines for all SMU projects. Create a unique SMU line representation that is pulled from mainline collections. Create any new SMU styles that are needed. Direct design in any modifications that are needed to mainline styles to accomplish SMU needs. Ensure all stages of approval process are executed internally and with retailer. Responsible for requesting style numbers and placing PO’s.
2. Plan comprehensive design packages that meet the objectives for fashion trends, innovation, image, and margin for special make-up customers. You will work with design and development to assist in getting costs to meet needs of SMU customer and department margin goals. You will regularly meet with internal sales team to receive input on current trends. Utilize trend information and incorporate into SMU designs, keeping a healthy balance between Fox’s design aesthetic and customers product needs.
3. Act as point person with SMU accounts. Responsible for communicating all critical information delivery, costing, design modifications, etc. Assist sales in arranging meetings with retailer coordinating with design and product development to make sure all necessary samples/cads are available. Assist sales team in running meetings.
4. Maintain records of all critical information (Costs, Style #, Retail, Delivery Dates, Margin, Design notes, etc). Utilize all quantifiable information to analyze current business as well as plan out future businesses strategies. Manger will use in season information to create recaps of all SMU businesses.
5. Manager will be responsible for negotiating all costs and retails with SMU accounts. Responsible for achieving department Sales and Margin goals.
6. You will be expected to anticipate and predict challenges from SMU accounts in order to avoid delays to the process and calendar. Manager will offer solutions and recommendations to assist in development process and to help avoid timing conflicts.
7. The SMU Manager will insure that SMU styles are consistent with Fox’s Mainline Design and Pricing structures. SMU product will always make quality and value a top priority and will not dilute merchandise to achieve sales.
8. Be available to train and teach SMU coordinator. Act as mentor in developing coordinator to be able to execute all functions of coordinator responsibilities and to fill in for manger in unique circumstances.
9. Some Travel will be required. You will attend trade shows, sales meetings and events that appropriate for market.
Minimum Education, Experience and Skills Required:
• College Degree
• Minimum 5 years of product development or merchandising related experience.
• Ability to use discretion and independent judgment to meet objectives within set timelines.
• Thorough knowledge of Windows platform with an emphasis on Word and Excel.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must be able to manage multiple development projects, across several categories, within the set timeline and meeting the standards set by management.
• Knowledge of costing, negotiation, forecasting, manufacturing.
• Ability to execute the development of complete projects, resolve issues and make recommendations to design and merchandising teams.
• Ability to work across multiple categories, meeting all calendar deadlines and standards set by management.
• Must have the ability to train and mentor Assistants.
• Must have a strong attention to detail, ability to think on a conceptual level, with confident decision-making skills and good use of judgment.
• Excellent time management skills are necessary with superb organization
• Must be able to work as part of a team and with a diverse group of people and projects
• Previous work experience in active apparel market.
Physical Requirements:
• May be required to work more than 8 hours during a workday
• Sitting for long periods of time
• Significant manual dexterity for keying in data for long periods of time
Scheduling Requirements:
• Must be available to work occasional off-hours
• Must be available during standard business hours
• Must be available to travel domestically
