Our designers strive to deliver customer-centric experiences that are inspiring, inclusive, human, purposeful & trustworthy.The Customer Innovation team at REI is looking for a Cross-Disciplinary Design Intern that can bring diverse perspectives and experiences in designing for customer needs that span digital, service, and omni-channel. Throughout the course of your internship experience as a Cross-Disciplinary Designer, you’ll work alongside the other Product Designers on the Customer Innovation team to build deep knowledge of the customer journey and what it means for them to get outdoors through research that informs design strategy.

The Customer Innovation team’s test & learn methodology requires us to think and work differently, using customer-centered designs optimized for speed of learning and requisite level of fidelity that allow for learnings and insights to be uncovered and for the team to gain relevant knowledge around customer frictions, unmet needs, and product-market fit for new product or service offerings.

Non-Local Candidates: Relocation assistance & intern housing are not provided for this role- all costs & arrangements will be the responsibility of the intern for the duration of the internship.Duration:

10 -12 weeks (mid- June to September)

UI/UX work though projects that require generative work and gaining understanding of context and problems; Sense making and turning generated data into insights; Ideation that leads to new thinking about problems, hypotheses, and solutions; Experience architecture and interaction design, from the high-level to the detailed experience.

Job functions include:

Conducting in-person or remote user research via surveys, interviews, focus groups, usability tests (we use UserTesting)
Participating in brainstorming sessions and design workshops with colleagues
Collaborating with cross-functional teams such as developers, product managers, and marketers
Presenting design concepts or prototypes and explaining design rationale to stakeholders
Developing experience maps to describe the overall customer journey
Creating wireframes, prototypes, and user interface designs (we use Figma)
Observing users in-person to gather feedback and insights
Analyzing user behavior and feedback using digital analytics tools
Iterating on design concepts based on user feedback and data insights

Qualifications and expectations:

Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Design, UX, Interaction, HCI, Architecture (or related field), or a recently completed (within 6 months) certificate program in one of the aforementioned fields of study.
Career interest in innovation and human centered design thinking, preferably in the design of digital and/or physical customer journeys
Exceptional collaboration skills, with track record of successfully partnering to consolidate information from various sources, including feedback from others to inform work
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and distill key learnings from multiple data sets and information
Working knowledge of design and prototyping tools such as Figma (which we use)
