East Coast Upstart, Ergophobia Set to Make it's Mark at SurfExpo

Ergophobia is set to launch its Spring '08 Cut and Sew Collection, along with an artist collaboration line from Taylor (also known as Pinky Taylor) at Surf Expo in Orlando this September.  When Rob Sickel and Pete DiSpirito met with Seth Gerszberg, the CEO of Ecko Enterprises, they had no clue what they were getting themselves into.  A year later, after picking up some industry heavyweights, Ergophobia is set to go.  "We have had a few expensive lessons, but we are finally ready to introduce our brand into the market," says Vice President Pete DiSpirito. "It was a little rough at first, but we are now working with top industry designers, artists, and production facilities.  We are really stoked on all of the pieces that we will be displaying. Although we have a few new concepts to introduce into the market, most of our line represents the fine boundary between surf and skate apparel while adding some street style."

The definition of ergophobia is “an intense or abnormal fear of work.”  But for Sickel and DiSpirito, Ergophobia represents a fear of Corporate America, cubicles, commuting, and all of the performance anxieties that go along with a job. "We were sick of dredging through our 9 to 5 cookie cutter lives, so we became proactive in finding someone to believe in us so we could make this pipe dream happen," says President Rob Sickel. "We just wanted to wake up every morning excited about what we were going to accomplish and take our lives back from the means of society."

Ergophobia, an east coast based company, has been on a thorough east coast marketing campaign for the past 12 months, which led them to opening a few key accounts with their pre-launch line.  Although most all of their focus has been on the east coast, they don't plan on stopping there.  "We just want to plant our roots here and start small so we can focus on quality and customer service," says DiSpirito.  "It’s only a matter of time until the East Coast catches up and we will be on the forefront; we’re based near Jenks, one of the best waves on the east coast, and we’re within an hour of New York City and Philadelphia.  As we build our rep force and people realize we are legit, we plan to expand into the west coast market."

Besides providing their amateur surf and skate team with exposure, and getting them to events around the world, Ergophobia's main concentration is getting ready for their debut at Surf Expo this September.  "We just got back from Cali to do a final walk through of our trade show booth at Pumphouse," says Sickel.  "We realize that we only have one shot at making a first impression, and we are dedicated to doing everything the correct way."
