IASC Update - Go Skateboarding Day, New Members, and More

IASC is proud to announce the newly established non-profit Go Skateboarding Foundation. The mission of the Go Skateboarding Foundation is to make a difference in young peoples lives through skateboarding. The Foundation will promote skateboarding and hopes to make a positive impact in our communities by providing positive experiences and programs to less fortunate young people and encouraging the building of skateparks through charitable foundations. The Foundation will sustain and grow the programs started by the IASC Youth Committee. In 2005 the Youth Committee donated scholarship funds sending less fortunate skateboarders to skatecamp. The committee also made donations to the Tony Hawk Foundation and the Patrick Kerr Foundation helping young skateboarders go to college. We are excited to announce that the first donation to the Foundation has been made by Tum Yeto mastermind, Tod Swank, on behalf of PIG skateboard products and Bravo Corporation. In an act unprecedented in the skateboard industry, PIG and Bravo entered into a licensing agreement based on the condition that Bravo will donate proceeds from the sale of non-core skateboard products to non-profit organizations that support the skateboard community. Thank you Tod for taking such exceptional steps to make a difference in the skateboard community! IASC will be seeking Founding Donors for the Go Skateboarding Foundation in upcoming months. | ||||

In another first, Podium Distribution has joined IASC and in the same motion committed funds from their upcoming Photographer Series exhibit and silent auction to the newly formed Go Skateboarding Foundation. The June 3rd event will take place in Los Angeles and is a prelude to the release of the DVS Photographer Series shoes featuring photos from creative heavyweights Gabe Morford, Mike O’Meally, Ben Colen, Giovanni Reda, and Atiba Jefferson. “Skateboarding and Skateboarders need the respect they deserve. Whatever I can do to help evolve the sport I will do and this next step was to join the IASC” Said Tim Gavin, Vice President of Podium Distribution. Both DVS and Lakai plan on blowing the doors off Go Skateboarding Day with events scheduled with team riders from both companies. DVS will hold it down in Simi Valley at the Skate Lab and the Lakai destination will be announced soon. | ||

On May 5, 2006 www.goskateboardingday.org went live! You couldn’t miss it with everyone from skatedaily.net to about.com broadcasting the good news! (Thanks guys for helping get the word out to “the kids” about the holiday!) The good folks at our member company, Nixon, have also created this fabulous GSD countdown timer (Nixon Timer) for anyone who wants to keep track of how many seconds are left till the big day on your own web site. (Email info@skateboardiasc to get the goods) It really is getting bigger! The number of events just keeps growing, from the God bowl event in Australia to the 3rd Lair event in Minnesota and all the events in between, we can’t even keep up with all the emails from people around the globe declaring their determination to “SKATE ALL DAY!” With a growing mailing list and the votes for best skatepark & favorite video, and the promotions from supporters like Freshpark and FUEL TV, June 21st promises to be skateboarding mayhem around the world! In the US forward thinking cities have declared June 21st official Go Skateboarding Day. Thanks to Mikes Surf Shop, the city of Hamilton, Virgina joined the ranks of skateboard loving cities officially declaring June 21st Go Skateboarding Day in their town. In 2004 the city of Lake Forest, California recognized the holiday as did Russellville, Arkansas during the 2005 celebration. Go Skateboarding Day originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face, to show the world what skateboarding is really all about, to reclaim our culture and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. In the three years since that first celebration, the holiday continues to grow, but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding! Get the word out! USA Skateboarding (USAS) has been very active over the past six months but almost all of this work has been of a preparatory nature to help us move towards some of our most important goals and objectives. Being a relatively new organization, USAS is spending a good deal of time and effort putting together the organization structure and programs. Negotiations with our insurance carrier to start our membership program have been finalized. This coverage will not only be available to individual members of USAS but we will make this available to any group or organization that wants to or needs to provide insurance coverage to skaters at one day events or at a respective park, skate facility or event. We will have very fair and reasonable rates. Our underwriter has been very supportive of the growth and development of skateboarding and skateparks. We were very pleased when the Dew Action Sports Tour asked USA Skateboarding to act in a technical advisory capacity for it's first year five-city tour. Chris Miller was our on-site representative at all five stops and we all felt this was a very successful first-time venture for USAS to be involved with a major national event. USAS has signed it’s first sponsorship agreement with General Mills "Fruit by the Foot" brand. This was quite important to all of us considering we will have our first real events and USAS produced programs starting this year. The deal is directed towards a grass roots "Junior Jam" coming this coming fall. A major reason for the creation of USAS was to support grass roots and developmental programs in skateboarding. We are very close to announcing our first endeavors in grass roots programs and a national initiative that will be the real cornerstone of USAS for many years to come. Our board members are some of the most active people in the skate industry and the work they do is greatly appreciated. USAS would also like to thank IASC for its continued good work and its efforts to support and continue to develop skateboarding world- wide.
