I graduated from UC Riverside in 3 years with a B.A in Psychology. While attending, I played Division 1 Volleyball for my school in the Big West Conference, acted in my Associated Student Body on the Basic Meeds committee as a mental health team lead, and represented my campus in the UC Mental Health Coalition. Throughout my years of undergrad, I gained an array of experience through research and study in areas of human development, neuropsychology, and general psychological principles. I also gained a vast amount of experience in leadership, discipline, and work ethic through my commitments. My educational background provides a great foundation for a wide variety of fields that all interact with the human mind, body, and behaviors all throughout the stages of life.

Breaking Bias

Recently, I was given the incredible opportunity to shoot with INNOCEAN USA and pocstock for ‘Breaking Bias’, a campaign set to address and correct the lack of diversity and presence of racism in stock and AI imagery. This bias is especially common in extreme sports, like surfing. 🏄🏾‍♀️ 

AI often reinforces harmful stereotypes, like “Black people don’t surf” or “Black people can’t swim”. This must change.

As a photographer and videographer on this project, I had the privilege of capturing other Black surfers in Huntington Beach, CA for the campaign. 

Thank you David Mesfin , DeSean Brown , and Nathan Fluellen for bringing me on board. It was truly a wonderful experience. 

This is a step toward proper representation in media for all people of color who love surfing and other extreme sports. I can’t wait to see where this initiative leads.

A Great Day in the Stoke, 2024

I had the pleasure of being a part of the production team at the Third-Annual A Great Day in the Stoke surf competition in Huntington Beach, CA. This competition highlights black and brown surfers from around the world at one of the most famous surf spots in history - Surf City, U.S.A. 

To have had the opportunity to work amongst other talented creatives and shoot some amazing surfers like Mikey February and Julian Williams…it is an experience I will be forever grateful for.

Hi, I’m Kayla! 👋🏾 As a Social Media Specialist at Zwift, I manage and track the interactions within our online community while leading and supporting various projects across the social team. My role includes collaborating with partnered influencers, creating strategy pitches for social platforms, producing digital media, and analyzing business metrics to improve engagement and performance. I’m also a passionate videographer, specializing in surf videography and coastal landscapes. Through my lens, I aim to tell stories about the surf culture and life while in tune with the ocean, showcasing the dynamic history and deep sense of community of those who call the ocean home. I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Journalism and Media Studies at The University of Alabama, continuing to refine my skills and expand my knowledge of multimedia journalism and communications. I would like to highlight my experience working at Boat Rentals of America, Long Beach, during the Summer of 2020. As a Dock Hand, I was responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment, ensuring that boats were properly cleaned and sanitized before and after each use. Additionally, I provided excellent customer service by handling reservations, answering phone calls, and educating customers on boating protocol. My office tasks included opening and closing the office, managing cash, and sending emails. It was a great opportunity to develop my organizational and communication skills while working in a fast-paced environment.
