I work aboard the museum’s diesel-electric submarine, the USS Blueback, giving informational tours to the public and explaining the science behind submarine vessels to adults and children using hands-on simulations and visual aids. Work also included overnight educational camps on board the USS Blueback with overnight educational groups. I have spent an extremely enjoyable summer reacquainting myself with Portland and its people as a Bike Tour Guide, leading groups of up to 10 people through tours of the city, tours to food establishments and tours to local breweries. It is my foremost duty to look after the safety of the group, and then to deliver interesting, entertaining and accurate information to the group over the course of several hours while biking to various locations around the city. I also assist in the shop in Old Town with renting bikes and equipment to visitors, and ensuring that they are properly fitted to mechanically sound equipment during their visit. I also assist in minor mechanical repairs in our full-service repair shop. In these roles I have been in charge of delegating tasks and managing my team, managing my own business, overseeing logistics and equipment, looking after budgets, as well as working closely with clients to provide services and finished products that meet their highest expectations. At Podium 4 Sport in Belfast, Northern Ireland, I provided customers, fellow employees and our company buyer with my knowledge and interest in outdoor and trail running clothing and equipment, and worked across both my own Outdoor department and the bike shop in their multi-department sporting goods superstore. I kept myself up to date with product knowledge in fast and light camping and trekking, trail running, cycling and ultra endurance sports, and had input on selecting seasonal lines of merchandise for the Outdoor section of the shop. I helped forge partnerships and sponsorships of race series’ with local mountain running associations and athletic clubs, and attended sponsored sporting events. I also familiarised myself with bike brands Merida and Trek, and helped sell new bikes under the UK-wide “Cycle to Work” subsidised scheme. As sales staff at Cotswold Outdoor in Belfast I was endeavoured to have a good practical experience of the gear and clothing I sold so that I was able to communicate clearly with customers and make gear recommendations to them based on their specific needs. I attend weekly training on technical knowledge of products or their components, or specific pieces of kit to ensure my product knowledge was always up to date. I was also required to help present the shop in a welcoming and appealing manner to customers, and present myself as an ambassador of Cotswold’s excellent customer service experience. At Smart Tech AV in Portland, OR, I was part of a team of dedicated folks who provided sound, projection and lighting equipment, and expert management of these systems, at live events and conferences in Portland, as well as around the USA. It was a physically demanding job, requiring working long, unsociable hours and often heavy lifting. I excelled as an AV tech in my ability to communicate with our clients and users, and work with them through every step of their gigs and presentations to make sure we provided the very best service. While attending Portland State University full time, I worked within the Graduate Multimedia computer Lab in the IDSC, providing functional support and tutorial help. I was part of a vibrant team of folks working in the old Brew Pub at Bridgeport Brewery in NW Portland, OR. It was an enjoyable and energetic time in one of Portland’s first craft breweries. At Mt. Bachelor Ski & Summer Resort in Bend, OR, I was a Snowboard Professional Instructor in the winter seasons, and I was an ambassador for Burton Snowboards. I attained a Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) Snowboard level 2. I was required to lead group classes and private lessons for adults and children, attend dry land training and on-hill skills clinics, assist Ski Patrol when required and help to ensure the safety and security of all visitors to the resort. In the spring, summer and autumn seasons I worked in additional roles in other departments, including: Chair Lift Operator for spring season skiing and summer sightseers on Sunrise and Summit chairs; Operations Maintenance assisting Lift Maintenance crews and providing manual labour on improvement projects; sign making in the Graphics Department. https://www.mtbachelor.com
