SurfAid International is a non-profit organization dedicated to the alleviation of human suffering through community-based health programs. SurfAid currently works in an isolated region of Indonesia where many people are suffering and dying from preventable diseases. The goal is to achieve success with innovative health programs that produce lasting change, and position SurfAid to benefit more people through internal growth and partnerships with other NGOs.
With the support of the New Zealand and Australian governments, the global surfing community, and most importantly the people of the affected areas themselves, SurfAid has come to exemplify the healing power of cross-cultural partnerships.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated and dedicated person to become the Executive Director for SurfAid International USA. The Executive Director heads the operations of SurfAid International USA and is accountable and reports directly to the Board of Directors of SurfAid International USA and the Australia based CEO. This is a challenging position requiring related nonprofit professional experience, motivation and maturity, administrative and management skills, a high level of personal integrity and a passionate commitment to the alleviation of human suffering.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Chapter Leadership: With supervision from the USA Board and the CEO, responsible for the management of fundraising, administrative and financial operations of SurfAid International USA. Works with the CEO to create operations strategy and budget for Chapter. Manages the achievement of annual revenue and expense targets, directs strategic and operational responsibilities and holds himself/herself and others accountable for performance in achieving targeted goals and objectives. Responsible for fostering a culture of teamwork and collaboration. Ensures proper handling of legal, accounting, regulatory, and insurance affairs associated with a USA 501(c)3 organization.
• Fundraising: Responsible for the ultimate success of all fundraising activities of the Chapter. Creates annual fundraising plan including short- and long-term fundraising strategies and goals. Fosters and maintains relationships with Board members, major donors, ambassadors, key volunteers, corporate sponsors, foundations, government agencies, members, advocates and fundraising event participants. Directs and supervises staff and develops and implements fundraising strategies. Develops and cultivates funding sources, actively pursues major gift and donor development activities and maintains donor relations. Develops and supervises cost-effective fundraising initiatives and events. In conjunction with the CEO and Senior Program Management, works to secure grants from government agencies and foundations. Ensures effective maintenance and use of the donor database.
• Marketing and Public Relations: Manages SurfAid’s external relations with public, private and philanthropic sectors, as well as with community organizations, other social service agencies, media and vendors. In conjunction with the International Marketing and Communications Director, fosters relationships with the surf and mainstream media, performs as a spokesperson for the organization and is responsible for the delivery of SurfAid International’s marketing and communications strategy in the USA. Cooperates with other SurfAid staff to publish SurfAid newsletters and viral e-mail campaigns, and participates in online partner relationships. Participates in the design and implementation of the annual marketing and communications strategies for SurfAid International and manages key initiatives.
• Financial Management: With the International CEO and CFO, develops the Chapter’s annual budget and operates within the approved budget. He/she supervises and directs the implementation of all accounting procedures, internal control structures, and financial reporting required of the Chapter according to the fiscal policies of the International Organization and the Chapter.
• Personnel Management: Provides leadership, encouragement and support to other employees of SurfAid USA, interns and volunteers to achieve the organization’s objectives. Involved with the Board and CEO in hiring, training, and if necessary the termination of USA Chapter staff as well as conducting annual performance reviews in conjunction with the CEO.
• Board Development: Together with the CEO, is responsible for providing assistance to the Board in developing policies and strategies and ensuring implementation. Assists in the planning and implementation of Board meetings. Works with the Board to identify and recruit new members.
• Volunteer Engagement: Responsible for recruiting and ensuring a welcoming, engaging and productive environment to mobilize the talents and resources of people who want to assist SurfAid.
• Program Services: Responsible for communicating ideas and strategies for consideration regarding the planning and development of SurfAid International programs and services. Manages SurfAid USA’s participation in the SurfAid Billabong Schools Program with the International Schools Program Manager.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree required Master’s degree in related field preferred.
• Experience: Demonstrated organizational, management, operational and leadership experience with an impressive history of growth and advancement in development/fundraising with nonprofit organizations. At least five years experience in a fundraising and development role with demonstrated experience in donor management and cultivation and proven success in securing gifts and contributions from individuals and corporations. Proven success in identifying grant funding opportunities as well as effective grant writing skills. Financial management experience, including developing and managing budgets, and a proven ability to meet financial goals. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work requirements. A successful track record in forming and maintaining meaningful relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and the ability to interact with representatives within a culturally broad organization. Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and public speaking communication skills.
• Other: Excellent computer and IT skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and in managing a fundraising database. An appreciation of surfing and its culture. Demonstrated experience promoting international community health programs preferred. Willingness to work outside normal hours.
